I think my mom was pretty good about telling me about gender inequality. My mom still watches those old shows like Petticoat Junction and the Andy Griffith show and I’ll watch it if she puts it on. I can remember this episode from Petticoat Junction when the oldest sister was competing with these grown men playing golf? She was really good at it and better than the men. Her aunt told her she needed to forfeit because she was making the men look bad. She was so upset about it but she did it anyway. I remember being so annoyed by it! They had a great opportunity to show that men aren’t better at EVERYTHING. My mom always told me to NEVER do something like that. If I’m good at something it doesn’t matter what it was to make sure no one tells me to quit because I’m a girl.
I know when I was younger my aunts wanted me to act and dress more “girly” but honestly since they weren’t my mom I didn’t listen to them. Always close my legs when sitting even when wearing pants. Playing with dolls instead of wrestling with the boys (even though I did both).
I like the idea of describing yourself as a color! I think I’d be a maroon color? So on the scale of blue and pink, not entirely feminine just some spice of masculine.
I think gender equality can really help kids have more role models when they have people that look like them. If a little Hispanic girl wanted to be a CEO one day I feel like she’d have more motivation to work towards her dream if she had someone to look up to. I think it gives everyone more opportunities to do the things they want to do without being judged. To say that specific jobs are only for men or only for women is gatekeeping employees with so much potential. It doesn’t even stop at jobs. You could be an artist or performer, or nurse or caregiver. But to say that you shouldn’t do something because it’s too feminine or too masculine, it just feels like a waste. I think the quality of life for people would be so much higher.
