I believe that to some degree inequality is inevitable but that doesn’t mean that it has to be as bad as it currently is. People died the past couple of days simply because it was freezing, and they were homeless, and it happens every year. And that’s just a representation of inequality in the states. I believe to some degree that inequality is some sort of motivator or at the very least it is for Americans which I personally believe is just a direct result of capitalism and having to watch people live lavish lives that their parents provided while the rest of us fight over $2,000 1bed 1bath apartments and struggle to feed ourselves on week 2 of our biweekly pay.
I think that all of those things are terrible. I think that while there will always be some form of inequality, we could still provide the less fortunate with lives worth living. I recently saw an article about how much of New York is covered with office spaces and how much of it (I don’t remember the numbers but it was a lot) just sits empty as the homeless are outside freezing and they put in structures that make it harder for them to find shelter or just a spot to lay down. I think we could provide everyone with the basic necessities, housing, food, healthcare and a car (unless you’re fortunate enough to live in a walkable city or one with great public transit. And let’s make minimum wage a LIVEABLE wage. I don’t think we all need to be riding around in a Bentley Bentayga with mini mansions and summer homes, those are things people should still have to work for and earn, but we should all have the opportunity to buy a house and at least a recent model of a midsize sedan without it being the huge purchase that it is.
My grandma’s first car was a dodge charger that she paid like 8 grand for brand spanking new. Now I work my ass off and can’t even afford to go on a vacation and yet I still live with my parents and I’m exhausted, I can’t even fathom getting a nice apartment in a decent area at a reasonable price, I drive a Honda civic, but you can’t tell me it’s not a hellcat. I’m not saying that we have to provide everyone with a life of luxury but rather a life that’s not so full of misery. One with a work life balance, where we are all a bit nicer to each other. Working in customer services shouldn’t be as shitty as it is, people need an appropriate time for maternity and sick leave etc.
I shouldn’t be afraid that if I have any kind of medical emergency that I might be another homeless person on the street freezing in the dead of winter of Detroit. I don’t think the average person is asking for much, everyone just wants to have enjoyable experiences and live comfortably, so why can’t we all just afford each other that? If life is about experiences, why can’t we collectively work together to make it enjoyable for everyone? To a degree social inequality comes from a place of greed and could be minimized if we started to ask “why?”.
