I’m Mexican-American and Southwest Detroit is my home.
It’s full of beautiful black and brown people.
It’s full of colorful murals.
It’s full of lowriders.
It’s full of rap, R&B, and Spanish music.
It’s full of Mexican restaurants and stores.
It’s full of schools and happy children.
I’m Mexican-American and Southwest Detroit is my home.
It’s full of poverty.
It’s full of empty lots.
It’s full of homeless people sleeping on sidewalks.
It’s full of lonely, lost drug users walking around looking for something to cope with.
It’s full of violence.
It’s full with enough “disappointment” for tourists to gentrify my home.
I’m Mexican-American and Southwest Detroit is my home.
Why are us black and brown people being pushed out?
Why can’t we experience and value a “good and better” neighborhood too?
