I would define my social class as middle class. Growing up we always had enough to buy what we needed and occasionally go on vacations or splurge on new furniture or a tv. My dad is very intelligent financially and although we didn’t make as much as many of neighbors, we still had more than we needed to meet our necessities. I think that being a white woman raised in a small conservative suburb definitely made an impact on my social class.
I was very fortunate to have the resources around me and access to a very well-funded school system that opened a lot of opportunities in my post high school education. Since coming to college, I’ve met many people who were at a higher social class then me. I’ve met many people who don’t have to work to pay for their own personal things while in college. I’ve met many people who never had to worry about where their tuition money is going to have to come from. Although I was initially jealous and maybe even a little sour, I realize that many people are a product of their environment and people aren’t yet aware of the privilege that they have. I think that is when social class becomes an issue is when people don’t realize the privilege that they have and aren’t aware of their status in society.
