So I think that the American Dream is to not be filthy rich but to live a stable life without the worry of losing anything you have. My parents worked hard for us to live a stable family life and I want to do that for my family in the future too. I don’t think they dream ever went away, I think that it is just always changing. I think the dream itself is different for everyone. I don’t think it’s one concrete answer.
You can ask this to people from different backgrounds and they give you different answers. If I asked my parents what the American dream is, it would be to help me prosper in life and life better than what they did when they were younger. Although many times I find myself just happy with being able to pay bills on time and still have money left over to pay for food. I ask other people my age and they will say the dream would be to live in a small apartment for themselves and their happy with just that.
The American Dream turned out to be the American Nightmare. It’s so easy to say you want to move up in live but it is so easy to go down by simple mistakes. Sometimes they’re not even your fault! I think the dream is easier to get if you were already born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Not to say that it’s impossible to go from nothing to everything but it is so much harder to do that it feels pointless to do it anyway. Sometimes it just feels like a phrase only used as a motivator to get people to work.
You work so much for so long only to earn so little, it never seems fair. It also makes me think of people from other countries that come here to live the American Dream. How many movies or tv shows have you seen where they think of this phrase, come here to live a better live, and it’s almost as bad as your origin country? You have better luck living in a family that has way more money than what they know what to do with. I think another bonus would depend on your race and gender to live a better dream than others.
