About Mahmoud’s research:
My research aims to characterize the mechanism of action for the bipolar disorder drugs lithium and valproate using both yeast and mammalian cell models. I am interested in determining the effects of these drugs on sphingolipid metabolism and the unfolded protein response. This research is fascinating and significant at the same time, as characterizing these mechanisms will enable the development of new drugs with better efficacy and minimal side effects.
