This page is dedicated to the CHI 3990 Directed Study in 2020 Winter: Photographic Representation of the Chinese Community in Metro Detroit, sponsored by the Wayne State Humanities Center’s Working Group Grant. Jennifer Kesler, John Kopchick, Ashanti Huddleston, Randy Owusu, and myself took pictures to present to the viewers how the Chinese community live or have lived in the Detroit metro area. We visited the Chinese classroom at Wayne State, the Old Chinatown on Cass, the Chinatown in Chicago, and the Chinese archives of Walter Reuther Library at Wayne State as a group. We had talks by Prof. Krysta Ryzewski of Anthropology, Emerita Prof. Marilyn Zimmerwoman of Photography, and alumnus Terique Birl on the history of the Chinese community in Detroit, the meaning of the art of photography, and techniques of photography. What has made this first-time offered class more unforgettable was it took place amidst the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the university and the city were locked down and students, faculty, and the community felt the panic, hope, doubts, anger, and mostly, reflections. Here are the collection of our pictures to show you how the Chinese in Detroit responded in the grip of the novel coronavirus. To see our pictures, please visit these posts:
