Resources on the current crisis in Ukraine (March 2022)

These resources were chosen with the intent to educate readers on the current situation and the complex histories of Ukraine and Russia. Directed at an undergraduate and up level.

Short articles/blogs:

• On the politics of history and the Russian’ state’s justification for war.  If you are going to assign one piece, it should be this one. It is excellent!
• History of Ukraine and Russia relations.
• Explanation of Putin’s “Memory Laws”.
• On the relative absence of mass protests in Russia, see the interview with sociologist Greg Yudin, who had just been beaten up in Russia for protesting
• For a different perspective on the crisis, see the SDS statement.

• BASEES has a wonderful set of podcasts on the history of minorities in Central and Eastern Europe.
• Native Detroiter and excellent reporter Terrell Jermaine Starr has been in Ukraine for several years. NPR recently interviewed him.
• The Kennan Institute is holding regular panels which students with specific interests or who want to study policy implications of the current crisis might be interested in.
