As of December 31, 2019, the following classifications of CLAS websites on the affected domains will be shut down.

Types of websites:

  • Personal faculty sites
  • Lab sites
  • Conference sites
  • Research project or group sites
  • Student org sites

Affected domains:

  • chem.wayne.edu
  • math.wayne.edu
  • econ.wayne.edu
  • physics.wayne.edu
  • clas.wayne.edu

This means that, for example, a personal faculty or lab website on any of the affected domains will be retired after December 31. Official departments, centers, institutes, and academic program websites on these affected domains will be handled by the CLAS Marketing Team. If your site has already been relocated to Warrior Sites or another hosting platform, nothing more is required.

Any active sites meeting the above criteria will be taken offline after December 31, 2019.

What to do if you want to retain your website

Warrior Sites

Should you wish to retain your current website on any of the affected domains, you may sign up for a free Warrior Site and begin transferring your content [manually] to the new platform. The CLAS Marketing Team provides support and training assistance with the migration of your content and beyond but does not offer any automated migration services to transfer the content for you.

Note: Many faculty acquire the help of student assistants to aid with the transfer and upkeep of their websites. Should you pursue this option, we’ll work with them on your behalf to support your new website.

C&IT hosting

If you do not wish to migrate your website to the Warrior Sites platform, you may sign up for free web hosting by C&IT (for static HTML websites). These static sites do not include a content management system, thus, you will need to familiarize yourself with some basic HTML skills and how to publish via FTP.

Third-party hosting

As another alternative, you can secure your own personal website hosting via a non-Wayne State University affiliated provider. Our recommended vendor, Namecheap, offers website hosting for as little as $3.88/month. While the CLAS Marketing Team cannot offer technical assistance or support with this hosting option, we’re always available for strategy and consultation to support your academic work.

Keeping your website address

If you wish to retain your existing website address, e.g. math.wayne.edu/myname, for marketing purposes, please let us know by email to clas@wayne.edu. Upon successful setup of your new site, we will create a URL forwarder from your old website address to the new one.

Where can student orgs get a website?

Student organization websites are no longer hosted alongside our departmental sites. Student orgs should apply for a new website using DOSO’s Get Involved platform that is specifically designed for WSU student orgs.

I have questions/need help

Should you have questions about the process, timeline, want to discuss the pros/cons of your options, or just want a tutorial of the new system, please let us know by email to clas@wayne.edu and we’ll make sure that you’re taken care of.
