Sports Nutrition Interns

Winter 2024 marked the inaugural CLAS/Nutrition and Food Science Sports Nutrition Internship.  With the support of CLAS, three NFS Majors were hired to work with the WSU Athletic Department to provide our athletes with scientifically-sound nutrition information.  Interns educated athletes on how to fuel workouts to assist them in reaching their performance goals.  This provided an excellent opportunity for our NFS students to gain hands-on experience with nutrition as an applied science.  Interns worked 10 hours per week, coordinating with the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer, Lisa Erickson, and the WSU Strength and Conditioning staff. The interns also collaborated with the WSU Athletics Creative Services team to develop and post social media content (take a look at waynestatefuelingstation). To our knowledge, this is the only Division II athletic program in the nation providing this service.

This program evolved from a volunteer program initiated five years ago (see Fueling Station, under past internships).
