My Story

I was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan before coming to America with my family as a baby. Growing up, I had three loves – my mother, basketball, and hip-hop music. Throughout my childhood, I watched my father work hard to become a doctor in Detroit, where he now works at the Detroit Medical Center. I came to school in Detroit at Wayne State University (WSU) to follow in his footsteps, but there, I found a different passion in teaching and mathematics. I first realized my passion when I took a Calculus II course at WSU.

My Calculus II instructor, Mr. Leonard Boehm, co-founded (along with Dr. Steve Kahn and Bessie Duncan) the Math Corps program at Wayne State University, housed within the Center for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (CEEM). I’ve worked with the program and CEEM extensively since 2014. Also while at Wayne State, I got involved with the Downtown Boxing Gym in Detroit. These experiences had a significant impact on finding my passion at WSU, and in particular, finding a knack for studying mathematics and communicating my love for mathematics to others.

I recently received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from WSU and continue to teach college students and children mathematics. Currently, I am an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Carthage College. I’m inspired by the students I teach, the second family I found at WSU, my colleagues and the mathematicians that I’m surrounded with.
