• Check out the Wayne State University Department of Mathematics. I take pride in being a student in this department, and I particularly enjoy the strong algebraic topology group in the department. I’ve found a great sense of community here, one where professors and lecturers engaging in cutting-edge research in mathematics are encouraging and more than willing to help. Moreover, the Center of Excellence and Equity in Mathematics is a gem within the department that encompasses its own programs to better the mathematics education of students in Detroit. I’m proud to say that I’ve worked extensively with the center.
  • The Wayne State University Math Corps is a powerful program for Detroit Public School students with its own philosophy, model and curriculum. You can watch a documentary on the program, “It All Adds Up: Math Corps”. The program is currently expanding nationally, with sites established in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and other locations.
  • The Mathematical Association of America is, I’ve found, an especially cool resource for mathematicians and educators. Teaching the rich ideas in higher mathematics is truly an art, and the organization treats it as such.
  • The American Mathematical Society is a great resource for the latest in mathematics research.
  • Check out the homepage of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences. I had the pleasure of visiting the institute, surrounded by a beautiful campus, for a conference in homotopy theory, and recommend it to any researchers in mathematics.
  • The Downtown Boxing Gym is another gem in the city of Detroit. Its motto is “books before boxing” – boxing is the hook to bring kids in, but the program is really about academic enrichment. The gym boasts an 100% high school graduation rate for its students. The culture there is incredible. While teaching there, I met kids that I’ll truly never forget. The program’s founder was highlighted by CNN Heroes.
