Dugaw’s Catalogue

At the center of the Warrior Women Project is a never-before-published type-written catalogue— a collection of more than 113 Warrior Women ballads– originally compiled by scholar Dianne Dugaw as an appendix to her 1982 dissertation, The Female Warrior Heroine in Anglo-American Balladry.

The catalogue is digitally archived on our site as a searchable PDF, with a new introduction written by Professor Dugaw in 2017. More than just transcriptions of ballads, Professor Dugaw’s catalogue is a scholarly resource in its own right, organizing and sorting the ballads according to theories and methods from Folklore as well as Literary and Cultural Studies and providing detailed bibliographic information for each ballad. We therefore have preserved the scanned original catalogue on this site in full, complementing it with our own digital search and sort system for the collection and other scholarship and resources.
